What changed in October 2024
AFIP was the Administración Federal de Ingresos Públicos. Its replacement is the Agencia de Recaudación y Control Aduanero, abbreviated ARCA. Decree 953/2024 established the institutional change, and ARCA is the current agency for national tax and customs administration. The old address, afip.gob.ar, now redirects to arca.gob.ar. That redirect explains why a historical link can still lead to a functioning government service.
The rename did not itself cancel a taxpayer's obligations or turn an old registration into a clean slate. Check the current ARCA instructions for the procedure you need, since separate rules and service changes may affect how it works today. This page answers the 'afip arca' search honestly: the acronyms describe predecessor and successor, not two competing agencies or one combined official name.
The numbers identify different relationships
CUIT is the tax identification code used for tax registration and commercial activity. CUIL identifies a person for employment and social-security purposes, and its administration belongs with ANSES rather than treating it as simply another ARCA tax account. CDI is an identification code that may apply in certain circumstances where someone does not have the other relevant identifier. They should not be chosen according to which acronym sounds easiest to obtain.
Ask the receiving institution which identifier your actual procedure requires, and confirm the application route with the responsible authority. Your immigration and identity documents may affect what you can submit. A DNI is an identity document, not a tax registration, and obtaining one does not by itself register every activity you plan to undertake. Keep the requirements for employment, invoicing, and an isolated transaction separate until the responsible office connects them.
Clave fiscal controls access, not eligibility
Clave fiscal is the credential used to access ARCA's online tax services. The agency's authentication requirements and security levels determine which services you can use and how identity must be verified. Follow the current official route for creating or recovering access. Do not assume an old screenshot or a friend's account setup describes the process available for your documents today.
Being able to enter the portal does not establish that you are registered correctly or eligible for a particular regime. An accountant may need authorized access to work on your behalf; ask about the official authorization mechanism instead of sharing your password. Keep confirmations of registrations and changes outside the active session in a secure record. A successful login and a completed administrative action are different milestones.
Monotributo needs a fit check before registration
Monotributo is a simplified regime for eligible small taxpayers, combining specified tax and, where applicable, social-security components into a periodic payment. Eligibility and category depend on the current rules for the activity and taxpayer. It is familiar vocabulary among freelancers, but familiarity does not make it the right arrangement for every Canadian working in Argentina. Check ARCA's current category tables rather than copying a peso amount from an older guide.
Canadian clients do not automatically put remote work outside Argentine tax rules or outside every possible monotributo arrangement. Where the work is done, tax residence, the nature of the service, and applicable invoicing and exchange requirements need examination. Have a qualified accountant assess the activity before issuing invoices or selecting a category. Registration should follow an understood tax position, not become a substitute for finding one.
Categories and obligations can change as activity changes or official tables are revised. Ask what must be monitored, which records to keep, and when a review is required under current rules. Preserve invoices and payment confirmations with the relevant period. A monthly payment alone does not establish that all national, provincial, or other applicable obligations have been addressed.
The rename gives phishing a believable story
An unexpected message claiming that the AFIP-to-ARCA change requires an urgent credential update deserves suspicion. The story contains a real event, which makes it useful bait. Open the official ARCA website yourself instead of following an unsolicited link, and inspect the destination domain carefully. A copied logo or a page mentioning the correct decree does not prove that a request is genuine.
Never give a caller, email sender, or messaging contact your clave fiscal or one-time codes. If a notice appears to concern a debt or filing, check it through your known official account route or verified professional contact. The same caution applies to someone promising faster registration in exchange for remote access to your device. Separate the government's actual instructions from the urgency created by the person contacting you.
For a Canadian household, the useful comparison is with the CRA: the agency provides services and administers rules, but a portal does not assess your whole cross-border life for you. Residence, Canadian pensions, foreign investments, and work arrangements may require coordinated advice. Keep the current agency name on your notes so an older reference does not quietly become current guidance.
You will still hear the old acronym in conversation. Recognizing it is useful; following it without checking the current source is not. Let ARCA's official services, and advice grounded in your own circumstances, determine the next step.
Questions that change the plan
Is AFIP still Argentina's tax agency?
No. ARCA replaced it in October 2024 under Decree 953/2024, and the old afip.gob.ar address now redirects to arca.gob.ar.
Are CUIT, CUIL, and CDI interchangeable?
They serve different administrative purposes. Confirm the identifier needed for your specific tax, employment, or transaction procedure with the responsible institution.
Can a freelancer with Canadian clients use monotributo?
Eligibility depends on the activity and current rules, not simply the client's nationality. Ask an Argentine accountant to assess registration, invoicing, and any applicable exchange requirements.
Should I update credentials through an ARCA rename email?
Do not follow an unsolicited credential-update link. Open the official site independently and verify any required action through your known account or official support route.
